1、（常与to, with连用）相同的
cut the cake into six equal pieces
把蛋糕等分成六块
One li is equal to half a kilometre.
一华里等于半公里。
It is equal to me whether he comes or not.

2、胜任的；经得起的
John is quite equal to the job of running the office.
约翰很能胜任主理这个办事处的工作。
